I really loved this short story collection. I know short stories aren’t everybody’s thing. But these were just something else.
Eerie and unsettling, the best I can compare them to in my reading experience is probably the short stories of Edgar Allen Poe, minus his obvious paranormal elements, and more of a surrealist style of writing.
I’m amazed at what Silvina Ocampo could do with my emotions and a story in mere pages. The longest of these (in ebook format) is maybe 5 pages long. And yet she crafted complex characters with deep layers of implied backstory that became players in various plots with open endings that just left me feeling completely unmoored.
And finally, the prose is beautiful. The translators did an amazing job. I wish my Spanish was good enough to read the original, but alas, I suffer from FOMO when it comes to reading all the books, so I probably would have been too slow to enjoy it as much.
