It's described as a gothic fiction, but it's pretty tame and not at all what we would consider "scary" in the modern day. Mostly you just follow Jane through her day-to-day life from childhood to young-ish adult and see the world through her eyes and thoughts, in first person, which is part of what made the book so revolutionary at the time.
