The body of a 70-year-old man who was struck on the head with a glass ashtray is found in a flat in Norðurmýri. The only clues are a photograph of a young girl's grave and a cryptic note left on the body. Detective Erlendur discovers that the victim was accused of a violent rape some forty years earlier but was never convicted. The novel won the Scandinavian crime writers' Glass Key award in 2002 for best Nordic crime fiction novel.

A classic detective book, murder, and who did it, but this was with a twist of the past of the murdered man. He has a rather sordid past and the detectives on case need to dig deep to find out who the murderer is. Written originally in icelandic and based in and around Reykavic it mentions on lots of occasions the rain and the bad weather, so wrap up warm for this one.
We learn about the corruption in the police 40 years before the murder.
The title is also unusual but as you read through you learn what is Jar City and it might give you the shivers.
Grim and noir.
Not something I would have read if it were not for this Read The World challenge.
