Tierra Del Fuego

Description:
This novel explores Captain Robert Fitzroy's abduction of Jemmy Button from his home in Cape Horn and Fitzroy's attempt to "civilize" Button in England in order to return him to his country as a bearer of "enlightened society." The experiment leads to tragic consequences. Tierra del Fuego deals with European arrogance and exploitation without resorting to the cliche of the "Noble Savage."".

A very well written historical novel, lots of detail of the era and the location which has always interested me, the style of writing was interesting, written from the point of view of an old man remembering his youth and adulthood, in the form of a letter, and the way there is true history mixed with fiction. The fiction part is the narrator and the real history is the story of Jemmy Button, a young argentine, or should I say, Yámana, an indigenous tribe from the Tierra de Fuego, in Southern Argentina. This is a very powerful story of history with the British and Argentine and their conflict about the Falkland Islands. I read the book in its original Spanish, and it is wonderfully written. This is one of those books I will remember for some time, it certainly makes you think about how so called civilized countries treated other countries.
