Description:
This unusual memoir of a spirited girl in the remote region of Nepal described in Peter Matthieson’s The Snow Leopard vividly portrays life in her primitive mountain village in the 80s, her struggles in bewildering Kathmandu, and her journey to America to receive life-saving surgery. Until she was 10, Dorje Dolma lived in the remote Dolpapa region of Nepal. Her family and community hewed to an ancient way of life, raising yak, growing their own crops, cooking over an open hearth, traveling on foot between their winter and summer homes. When the family went to Kathmandu to seek medical attention for Dorje, it took them a month of walking to the point where a bus could take them the rest of the way. From there, she had to be relinquished to a children's home and was taken to the US by a family for her surgery, where she lives today. This book chronicles her extraordinary life.
