Love, loss and slavery in a modernising Oman. The good: I now understand a little about Omani culture and history. I didn’t know anything before. Slavery was only abolished in 1970 in Oman! The bad: I struggled to finish the book because I was not invested in the characters. Alharthi keeps a distance between her characters and the reader by using a lot of third person narrative, and only staying with one character for a very short time before jumping to a different time and different character. The result was that much of the book was like listening to someone you don’t know and don’t care about, talking about other people you don’t know and don’t care about. The second half of the novel had more chapters where you really do feel for the characters, but this was rare, and it was already too late.

I enjoyed this story about a large family/ community a lot because it offers multiple perspectives on the same situation.I had no connection to Oman before but I feel like this book gives a great first impression.
