The famous Italian author Giovanni Papini constructs 7 stories focused on the deeds and experiences of real or imaginary witnesses of Jesus' passions, describing how they were affected by their encounter with the Son of God. In chronological order we find out through what tricks the devil convinces Judas Iscariot to sell the Savior for 30 pieces of silver (The Temptation of Judas); then we read about Barabbas, the criminal who was spared by Pilate (The Son of the Father); in the third story we find the episode of the cutting off of Malchus' ear by the apostle Peter at the moment when Jesus is captured in the Garden of Gethsemane (The Ear of Malchus); in the fourth legend, Simon of Cyrene is presented, the one who carried the cross on Golgotha in the place of the Savior (the Cyrenian), and in The Revenge of Caiaphas we witness the moment when he, in a fit of grandiosity, claims how proud he is that he, a simple man, killed a God. Pilate's madness reveals a man obsessed with discovering the truth and tormented by the guilt of having slaughtered the Jews. In the seventh and last story, two characters invented by Pope Celestine VI and Rabbi Sabbatai ben Shalom are presented (The Legend of the Great Rabbi). A memorable book about the inner turmoil of these characters and the tragic destiny of each of them, written in a manner that will surely conquer you.
