We all know about the horrendous period of slavery in America and watched many films about it, but to be able to go back in time and read the words of someone who went through it, was truly a special experience. It was nice to know that there were a couple of people who were sympathetic to the slaves and helped them wherever they could, it gives you a little more hope in humanity. When he wrote about fighting against one of his enslavers, I was like 'Go on Fred!' What a legend! He went through hell and back and kept persevering, despite being beaten and starved. I don't know how he did it but his story will stay with me for a long time. I love that he called out the hypocrisy that the most religious slave holders tended to be the cruelest. This is only a short read, very easy to read as well, so I think it's something everyone should read at least once in their lives, or any other book that's written by a slave to truly understand their perspective. It is truly mystifying how cruel people can be.
